- What did you think of your book’s ending?
- Are you satisfied with your selection of the book or not?
- What did you think of this book club unit? Any suggestions for changes?
I actually really enjoyed the ending of The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien. Even though it wasn't much of an "ending" because all the stories are different, I felt like this story was a good endnote for the book. It really tackled a deeper idea of how we as people deal with grief. We have little ways each of us process loss, just like how the soldiers would shake hands with the dead and Tim would see Linda in his dreams. I felt like this was a relatable story for most readers because everyone has lost someone and everyone dealt with it in their own way.
I am satisfied with choosing this book, however I almost think I would've enjoyed books like Copperhead or The Catcher in the Rye more. I learned a lot from The Things They Carried. It was a very eye opening book and one of the few non-fiction reads I enjoyed. It kept me intrigued and I would always wonder, "what is the next story going to be about", so I am glad I read it, but I would've enjoyed a novel with a story as well.
I didn't mind this unit actually. One thing I would say could change was that, at least for my group, asking for 30-40 minute talks was a lot to ask. Everytime we got to about the 15 minute mark, we started to run out of topics to discuss. I feel like our talks should be a little shorter, but besides that I thought it was a solid unit that I enjoyed.
